The main game on the second day at Grant Khomo week
featured Western Province who narrowly defeated the Lions on the first day,
against the Blue Bulls.
The game ended 36 points to 5 in favour of the young
men in blue and white stripes. As far as contests go, this game was like Floyd
Mayweather with his quick hands and slick movement against an overweight woman.
It really was that bad. The Bulls team offered nothing in the game. They
pretended to be a good side in the first half and came undone in the second.
The score was 15-5 at halftime but once the second half kicked off, WP ran riot
over the young lads from Pretoria. Tries from lock Pieter Jordaan, hooker
Rudolf Cornelius Brits who ran 45 metres down the touchline after a great
turnover from lock Jaco Willemse and another from left winger Veranzo Pipers
secured the victory for Province.
The impressive Tiaan Swanepoel, the man of the match
in the first game, didn’t not feature much in this match and his place in the
team was filled by Herschel Jantjes who produced a sterling performance with
the ball in hand on attack, kicking and on defence and he was named Man of the
Match. The fact that the Bulls were so poor in this game could perhaps suggest
that WP weren’t that great but they were efficient. WP forwards must also be
commended for the number of turnovers they forced in the rucks as well as
winning several scrums and lineouts against their own feed which is something
they also did well in their first game. Special mention must go to Brits, the
captain and hooker as well the two locks from Province, Jordaan and Willemse
and the outside backs who produced quality performances .The only Bulls player
who played fairly well was their replacement flyhalf, Tristan Nel, who tried to
ignite the Bulls backs and made a few mazy runs and opened up gaps that the
team weren’t able to exploit fully.
Perhaps the game wasn’t the spectacle expected of a
main game but the Province team did try to entertain. Watching this game made
realize why the Bulls recruit so many youngsters from other regions, Handre
Pollard most recently. Their junior sides aren’t all that great. It was a
disappointing display of rugby from the Bulls but nonetheless a clinical
performance from WP.
